As we progress into an era of eco-friendliness, many shopping malls and departmental stores have gone green islandwide. Several of these malls and department stores have taken the initiative to be more sustainable and kinder to the environment.
The Singapore government has always put significant emphasis on being kinder to the environment and has always encouraged the ‘3Rs’ to fellow Singaporeans. This was taught in schools and is also adopted in several workplaces and shopping malls as well. Almost everywhere we turn, there would be recycling bins in sight to encourage us to recycle.
Other than that, the Singapore government has also taken the initiative to build more ‘green buildings’ in Singapore. Green buildings are basically buildings in Singapore, be it shopping complexes, office blocks or even skyscrapers that in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts on our climate and environment.
BHG has also taken the step forward to become a more sustainable department store by eliminating the usage of single-use plastic bags. BHG has eliminated conventional plastic carrier bags and replaced them with oxo-biodegradable carrier bags.
In 2018, BHG partnered with Distglobal to introduce biodegradable re-usable shopping bags as an alternative to the current oxo-biodegradable shopping bags. BHG would like to encourage customers to opt for the re-usable bags as they are a more environmentally friendly option.
As compared to oxo-biodegradable plastic bags, conventional plastic bags are extremely harmful to the environment. Conventional plastic bags are hydrophobic, meaning it would repel water, and would not be biodegraded except over a very long time. Oxo-biodegradable on the other hand contains a catalyst that will degrade the polymer, making it hydrophilic (water-absorbent) and suitable for biodegradation.
To put it simply, conventional plastic persists and accumulates, while the oxo-biodegradable plastic is broken down and recycled back into nature.
Other than that, BHG has also encouraged their customers to reduce their usage of single-use plastics by selling their ‘Nature’ tote bags at cashier counters, where customers can choose to buy these tote bags to store their buys, instead of using the plastic bags.
Also, BHG donates all profits of the bag sales to Club Rainbow, a charity that supports and empowers children with chronic illnesses, as well as provide support to their families.
By buying these bags on your next shopping spree does not only save the planet but also contributes in making a change in a child’s life.
As a shopper, what could you do to make a difference? I always believe that every little step builds to a mile, and every little contribution matters. For example, separating and recycling your glass, cans or paper after doing your shopping goes a long way.
Taking the step to limit or eliminate your use of single-use plastic bags when you’re out shopping is also one of the ways you could contribute to being friendly to the environment. Bringing your own reusable shopping bags or purchasing one at the store you’re shopping at would make a big difference, and you’d feel good too knowing that you’re reducing your own usage of plastics and helping the environment!
And on your next shopping spree at BHG, opt for the reusable shopping bags or the tote bags. The tote bags are sturdy and are made of good quality, which means that you could use this over and over again for your future shopping trips, without feeling guilty towards the environment!
Like Mahatma Gandhi said, “be the change you wish to see in the world”. Remember that every little change you make, it always makes a difference.
Join BHG in their move to reduce single use plastics and BYOB (bring your own bag) when you pop by BHG Bugis and the Beauty Library. You could also purchase a BHG Beauty Library tote bag from the Beauty Library counter.
